Delay between changing nicks

I'm curious what a good delay would be if you had a script that tried using several nicks until it found one that was available. I know I could probably assume that x amount of seconds is a "safe" delay between requests, but I'm looking for a more exact number so the script moves as efficiently as possible. Thanks in advance.
