Looks like dumbgirl forgot where she came from!
Maybe there are romanian users behind the spams but they don`t always spam from romania...they use other contries! Romania doesn`t have enough resources to be used by users to spamm!

Worldwide statistics prove that most spam originates from American IPs - it may seem strange to you, but there are sooooo many companies for "e-mail marketing" over there. The second source for spam is Asia, where most insecure computer networks exist. Spammers usually find an open proxy with a fast Internet connection somewhere in Asia, whose administrator doesn't have a clue about installing a patch or running an antivirus program, and spread millions of e-mails through that computer. This way, spammers can effectively cover their tracks, although - again - most are "legitimate" American businesses. One of the most known spammers in the world is an American, his home is like a fortress and I bet he gets more death threats than Bill Gates. Try to catch up with news on spam and spammers, there's plenty of information online. Romania is just an insignificant origin somewhere down the list, compared to the traffic generated by other locations.

$true speeds! like i`ve said in the other post, romania doesn`t have enough resources to spamm users! If romanians use other people`s resources to spamm that`s another thing! Anyway i`m proud to be Romanian, i`m proud of romanians like speeds evilone and the list can continue..... :D Stop considering romania as the source of most of your problems instead of searching for the real source! It`s easy to say: The romanians did it!
Btw this will be my last comment on romanian issue, seems like i`m swimming against the curent! Every now and then someone comes and disses romania! I`m tired of explaing the good parts of my country...if you don`t have eyes to see them....your loss!

After reading the forum again i got to the conclusion that i started to post off topic! I appologise to that! However i won`t delete the posts! If a moderator will delete them...fine with me!

I have to say that it was my impresion too that it's about IRC spam....and not general spam if it was IRC spam...then i can't really tell which country "they" were spamming from (Yes i did get spammed on IRC)...and i don't think that is a really important point on the matter but rather how can we stop it ?

Yes: teach people to stop double-clicking such links because that will infect their computers, teach people to be responsible computer owners and update their Windows once a month, and so on. Don't blame only the virus authors for the spam we receive every day; blame people's stupidity. Too many people are gullible enough to think that a link received in private will take them to free porn, or that there is a magic, secret command that will give them op in any channel. That is the real problem: stupidity. Study some "social engineering" subjects or articles, you will be amazed how easily people can be fooled to accept something. Like, that new virus which writes at the end of each e-mail: "Scanned with (company name) Antivirus - No virus was found"; millions of people don't even think that such a message could be fake and they still need to scan each e-mail before opening attachments. Think how many people on Undernet see the message "NEVER give your password to anyone" every day, and they still send their username, password and even e-mail address to idiots claiming to be CService representatives!! Pure stupidity.

Spam on IRC is created by viruses. Viruses cannot infect your computer just-like-that (except for worms, but that's something else), the user has to take some action which starts the infection. So, the user is the cause of this problem. There's no way to filter the contents of messages exchanged over an IRC network.

sirAndrew: you have no idea what are Romania's Internet resources, so you cannot say that computers there can or cannot effectively send spam. And the Internet connections to the rest of the world exceed your wildest imagination, but they are reserved to corporate use who pay $20,000/month, not $15. What you pay for is what you get.

I have never payed for my net :)
Such stupid users deserve to get infected with trojans. Also, they deserve to pay for an <antivirus> / <firewall> / <dude that will reinstall windows>. Let them ignore all warnings and visit porn links. We should not care.

If it`s about irc spamms i can give you some easy solutions:

As a normal user my advice would be to stay out of lame channels and ignore lame people who have as an occupation illegal things!

As a helper it also easy to use a script which filters your queryes and notices.

Channel Spamm:It depends on your status on that channel, ban, modes +r and +m are also ways to stop spamming

There are many ways to stop spamming... To return to the question of the topic that would be: Romania! No comments about this!

My concern is how to prevent irc spamm?

Hi,

I'll try to answer and comment some of the questions asked. DumbGirl have you ever give it a thought about why this fuss about romanian users beeing lame or hackers or spammers etc ? There is no such thing. The nationality doesnt make an user lamer/hacker/spammer or anything lame. You don't get borned that way. Some of you people should learn that and i'm reffering to some opers too and "full of themselves" helpers here. They are the ones that usually think about themselves as very powerfull and that they are some kind of IRC superstars. You'r so wrong. Have it ever occured to you that helping is all about that "thank you" at the end ? That you should do it out of passion not to gain some status on a channel. It's useless for me to keep going on this as it will not change your attitude because you see i consider those like you who help to gain, more lame than any "stupid enough to click on a link" user who spams because he is infected and without his knowledge. Returning to the subject, DumbGirl and all of you look at the statistics of users and channels you will notice that romanian users and channels percentage on undernet exceeds any other nationaly. So we have more romanians on the network. Isn't it normal that the majority of hackers/spammers/lamers to be romanian too ? If we would have more spanish users i bet most hackers/spammers/lamers would be spanish, same goes for american, turkish or any other country. It's not about nationality, but about the user's choice, if he wants to use his knowledge to hurt others or to help others. It's just as simple as that.

If we are to reffer to IRC spam i would split that in two big categories. Spam done with the knowledge of the spammer and spam done without the knowledge of the spammer. We surelly encounter more spam of the second type i mentioned than the first and i must tell you that on some levels i wouldnt consider the user a spammer but the one who coded the worm he is infected with. Now do you really think that only romanian users are stupid enough to visit infected links or receive files or type strange commands ? In all these years of cleaning users i've seen users from all countries infected. It's no difference and if you don't believe me contact me and i'll allow you to sit an watch for a few hours in our channel to see how americans, romanians, french, canadians etc users have the same stupidity level when it comes to this and it's not because their nationality. And i wouldnt even call it stupidity, that's kind of a bad word, let's just name them "average users" or "common users" .

Some of the ways to protect yourself against these worms have already been pointed out by my friend puterfixer here, but i will repeat them and complete them, hopefully he won't mind me doing this. So here it goes:
  • 1. Keep your IRC client updated to the latest version (mandatory for mIRC which is most attacked). Try to use simple mIRC without any big pre-made scripts (which often contain hidden backdoors or vulnerabilities). If you choose to use some add-ons, choose them carefully and make sure that they are not buged.
    2. Don't visit any spamed links on IRC, don't receive files you havnt requested for or from people you don't know, don't type strange commands other users might give you and that you don't understand (except in a legit av assistance channel with official support and even then you have the right to ask the helper to explain the commands to you).
    3. Keep your browser patched (specially if it's internet explorer). If you use pop3 email clients such as Outlook keep them updated.
    4. Keep your windows updated, update it even often then a month. It's mandatory to install all critical and security updates.
    5. Try to get an anti virus software and run it on your computer. Be wise about your choice. Get one that is able to checks all webpages you visit, that checks all e-mails you receive in your pop3 client, to check inside the code of the files and so on. These are usually with payment but if you can't afford one at least get an good free one. I won't give product names here, but if you want to ask advices about your choice go in a av assistance channels and ask. If you do get an anti-virus it could be useless IF you don't configure it right ! If you have even the little doubt about how to properly do this go and ask for assistance. Also configure it to download the lates virus definitions VERY often. Once in a few days, because malware will not wait for you to update. Don't install more than one full anti-virus software on your system.
    6. Firewalls are not mandatory, but they prove to be a good asset IF you get the right one and you configure it right. Otherwise you could just end up with application conflicts, unwanted port blocks and un-functional services.

NOTE: Following these indications will get you protected by most malware out there BUT that doesn't mean that you are foolproof. There is no such thing as foolproof and you can get infected by mistake or even if you used all the security indications i gave. Never belive that you are fully protected.

Again, you get more romanian spammers because there are more romanian users. Also channels you choose to hang out in have a big influence in the ammount the spam that you get and people you get it from so choose them carefully.

Best regards and good luck,
Skello.

Romania's IQ is too high to have users that are so dumb to click on those stupid links. That's why i think other countries , with more newbies "connected" are the spam sources ... but i`ll keep the names for myself.

I'd love to respond to the statement above by reminding everyone who was behind the DDoS attacks that almost destroyed Undernet a couple years ago, and which country holds the absolute top record on number of script kiddies ever since Malaysia.
