Razvanet:
mIRC is shareware, after 30 days of use, the user is supposed to PAY for it. It is not crippleware, however. mIRC 6.1 is the newest version of mIRC, having been released on Aug. 29, 2003.

Eenie, Eenie all the mIRC versions were a shareware, after 30 days of use, the user is suposed to pay...but you didn't have too...for some reason you could have continued the use of mIRC for free as long as possible...but with the new mIRC version there is kind of days "countdown" which i'm afraid will block your ip from using until you pay after those 30 days! I'm not sure of that...but we will see over the time...

Razvanet, Razvanet .. not ALL mIRC versions have been shareware, mIRC started out as Freeware; do your background work before saying that!

And with shareware (which this version is, it is supposed to be registered if used past 30 days, period.)

Krejt has said that mIRC doesn't kill itself after 30 days, so the only thing that has changed is that you can no longer stop the nagging.

Please, let's not spread unfounded rumours here!

Yes, you CAN use the new mIRC version for FREE after the 30 days trial...like before, at every 30 days the Register mIRC page will pop up but that won't stop people from using mIRC for free.So if you had any doubts about this...find out that you CAN use it like before...but it's better if you register it just to have a piece of mind if you are an IRC addict and love to use mIRC.

Raz:

It is immoral and illegal to use any software past its demo version date...... if you like and use it after the trial, PAY FOR IT !

v6.12 has DCC exploit bug.
But it is not very dangerous like the old exploit.

If you minimize the 'DCC Get' window and maximize it, mIRC crashes.

So... it's not much of an exploit, is it? It's just a regular bug.

imo it is an exploit because they are sending a file which has nonsense name.
So *normally* nobody will send you file with lame name.
And you can't send yourself files too. (with one mirc)
Finally, we have got 1 victim and 1 lamer.
That means another person causes that crash...

In summary, this is an exploit not a regular bug.
If there is an 'another person' it named "exploit" or "security hole"

The exploit is the code used for triggering the bug in the program, in order to cause something bad: crash the software, gain access to a restricted resource, leave some code in memory, and so on. So mIRC doesn't have an exploit, it has (had) a bug caused by the lack of a simple filename length check. The script kiddiots who use fake DCC requests are exploiting this bug to make people's mIRCs crash. No software is bug-free; even a "Hello world" program has bugs induced by the compiler or the libraries. Programmers know than more than a third of the work needed for a program is only to verify the user data; so many checking routines, if your program expects a number and the idiot user types in a letter by mistake, or if the program only expects 200 characters maximum but somehow it gets passed 50.000 characters, and so on. And nobody can take into account ALL possible situations. Of course, this bug would have never been discovered if people used only normal DCCs; it became evident when someone used a fake DCC request, which is not a normal usage of this program.

If debugging is the activity of fixing/removing bugs in programs, then programming is... putting bugs in programs?
