Your username is invalid.
Connect with your real username, in lowercase.
If your mail address were foo@bar.com, your username would be foo.

huh? I recently installed a router, could this be the problem, or what's going on?

Hello, avalanch,

Indeed, modifying the network topology would be the issue.
I use a router myself, but I've set up port forwarding on it, so it'll forward the requests sent to port 113 (TCP+UDP, can't recall which one needs to be used) to my IP address. Therefore the identd server will work as usual.

Etherfast is elo@Etherfast.users.undernet.org

Second, if you can't access the router / don't want to set up port forwarding, I advise you to change your mIRC's ident AND e-mail address to something lowercase, and without special characters (spaces, and other signs) in it.

Etherfast is ~q3@Etherfast.users.undernet.org

Good luck and let us know what happened.

I have same problem:
Quote:
Checking for new version of X-Chat Aqua (743.42)
* Looking up irc.undernet.org
* Connecting to irc.undernet.org (195.197.175.21) port 6667...
* Connected. Now logging in...
* *** Looking up your hostname
* *** Checking Ident
* *** Couldn't look up your hostname
* Your username is invalid.
* Connect with your real username, in lowercase.
* If your mail address were foo@bar.com, your username would be foo.
* Closing Link: meltedbl by Helsinki.FI.EU.Undernet.org (USER: Bad username)
* Disconnected (Remote host closed socket).

Please help :)

Same problem, same suggestion.
Try what I've specified above, please, and let us know if it worked.
Otherwise, let us know what's still wrong there, and your network topology.

It isn't odd at all. It's just how the IRC deamon is coded. I am lazy to explain, plus Quakenet has the best explaination for this in their FAQ, I will just quote it, so people can read it in order to avoid further issues like this one.

Quakenet wrote:
'Bad username' refers to the used id that is between ! and @ in your address (ie. nick!user@host). It must comply with some specific rules:
* In a mixed-case name, if first char is upper, one more upper may appear anywhere.
* A mixed-case name must have an upper first char, and may have one other upper.
* A third upper may appear if all 3 appear at the beginning of the name, separated only by "others" (-/_/.).
* A single group of digits is allowed anywhere.
* Two groups of digits are allowed if at least one of the groups is at the beginning or the end.
* Only one '-', '_', or '.' is allowed (or two, if not consecutive), but not as the first or last char.
* No other special characters are allowed.
* Name must contain at least one letter.

Best Regards,
Mit.
