Normally, a whois reply to find out in which channel a user is, reads as follows:
nick on #channel_name

We have been getting a bizarre reply for members or drones of a flooding team:
nick on -#channel_name

What would the dash "-" mean before the channel name?

Tx

The dash in front of a channel name like that means the user has set his mode +d (deaf). With +d mode set, the user won't "hear" a thing that's said in the channels. Private messages do get through though. The primary reason for +d mode is to make the job easier for service bots that don't want to process channel messages.

Tx for your quick reply Eenie.

But since a user under mode +d can still send to a channel, it is a tool in the hands of flooders. They are not affected by the traffic the are generating.

I just answered your question.

Are you asking another one now? I am not sure what it is, if you are.

Eenie ;-)

Acctualy they are affected. They still send the input to the server thru raw even if they can't see it.

you missed his point, me meant that a hundred or so in your channel could happily repeat messages at a slow pace (each) that would result in enough messages that would flood a user without the +d setting off, without flooding the other drones off.

What you say its correct and incorrect at the same time. Yes they can flood the channel without gettin the other drones affected, Incorrect is that im pretty sure that there wont be 100 drones in my chan. I have written enough regex patterns and flood protection codes and filters to keep my chan safe :).

What i meant in the previous post was.. if you set +d and start floodin like nuts (sending msg's, ctcp's, actions) while thinkin that you will not be affected its wrong :) ...
But if more then one does that, by sending just 1 raw to the server, each one of em like u just said..... result { chaos }
